Numerous sources have credited H.L. Menchen as the author of the following quote: "As democracy is perfected, the office of president represents, more and more closely, the inner soul of the people. On some great and glorious day the plain folks of the land will reach their heart's desire at last and the White House will be adorned by a downright moron"—a prophesy arguably fulfilled by the two most recent Republican administrations.
It is especially telling that government is shutdown on the anniversary of Trump's inauguration. With both houses of Congress under Republican control there is no excuse for a government shutdown and as Republican Senator Susan Collins of Maine has said: "A government shutdown represents the ultimate failure to govern.".
In this case the blame for the current fiasco lies with President Trump and his administration no one else. In Europe a failure to fund government characteristically triggers a mandatory election. In other words constituents don't wait 3 or 4 years to try and put those who have the capacity to govern into office.
And it may be thought provoking to consider that declining powers typically blame outsiders [immigrants] for their woes—a moderately effective red herring for some percentage of the masses. .
This site's favorite question: "How can a nation devoid of humanitarian goals, dismissive of human rights, and primarily exporting war be considered the 'leader of the free world'?"
"Nothing practical can be done to turn things around. The American system is damaged beyond repair thanks largely to that undue military influence Ike warned against. Nowadays the nation is programmed to commit suicide while trying vainly to protect circles of great wealth underpinned by weaponry and armaments and fossil fuel interests—so much for the 'sweet land of liberty'."—Preface excerpt, Thoughts Uploaded: Toward cherishing freedom, practicing equality, seeking justice
